Every fortnight Ron comes and teaches us chess. He teaches us what the pieces are and how they move. Ron taught us special moves called ‘the Spanish torture’ and ‘the Arabian mate’. Grades 3 to 6 all had a game of chess against each other. I had a game of chess against Jasmyn and it was a stalemate.

Today we had our first Chess session with Ron, our visiting Chess tutor.

He explained that a Chess match had three games within it: the opening game, the middle game and the endgame.

Four important tips to remember at the beginning of a Chess match are:

  1. Attack the centre squares
  2. Move your Bishops and Knights out as quickly as possible
  3. Castling is an effective way to protect your King
  4. Do not move your Queen out early – save her for the middle game.

Do you use any special tactics when playing Chess?
Do you know the conditions for castling your King?
