Term 3 – Camp and Buddies

As Term 3 comes to a close, over the next three days we will be sharing some snap shots of the super fun and exciting things the Grade 5/6’s have been doing.

On the second week after the holidays, the Grade 5/6’s went on Urban Camp. We did lots of different activities including the Melbourne Zoo, Etihad Stadium, the Old Melbourne Gaol and MSAC just to name a few. Oh and we did LOTS of walking. Here’s Toby in the butterfly house at the Melbourne Zoo with a new friend.

In maths, the Grade 5/6’s have been doing a lot of work on measurement, shape and angles. We used our knowledge to create house designs using Planner 5D and during a session with our buddies, we helped them to make a house design too! Here is Maya teaching Maggie and Isabella how to design a home using Planner 5D. The link is included so you can try it at home!

Please tell us about your favourite camp memory or a room you might add when designing your own dream home!

Grade 5/6 camp – Beach Carnival

On Day 2 of camp we went for about an hour walk to the beach. After a snack we had some free time. Some of us played cricket, others went in the water or played in the sand. If we went in the water we were only allowed in as far as our knees.

After lunch our instructors arrived, Josh and Kat. We split into four groups. Each group had a colour: Jane-Red, Carolyn-Green, Tara-Purple and Mick-Blue. Each group got their faces painted by the group leader.

The first activity we did was a relay. We then played a game where your team lined up and you had a bucket in front of you. You got a cup and your team had to run back and forth from the sea getting cups of water to put into the bucket until it was full. The part that made it hard was the fact that only one person could go at a time.

Then we played ‘Cannon Ball Throw’. You each got a baseball with a tail attached. The aim of the game was to  get the cannon ball into a hoop. You got double points if you threw it into your colour hoop.

Thirdly we had a competition on who could dig a hole into the sand  until they hit water and get a hand full of water without  any sand. It was fun and challenging because we had to make sure there wasn’t any sand in it. We had to make the hole as big as you can. We had to fill in the hole as fast as possible.

After that we built the biggest sand castle in a certain amount of time the biggest sand castle was the red team.It was really fun and we all had a great time.

We played a game with bits of hose pipe. It was musical chairs but with hose and you started lying down.

The last activity was one person had to lay on the ground and the rest of the team had to bury their body below the waist and make it look like a mermaid tail. It was good.

Finally we went for the long walk home. On the way we saw a seal hunting and we watched it eat a fish.

Have you ever been to a beach carnival before?

Have you played anything similar to this before?

Grade 5/6 camp – Skateboarding

On the afternoon of Day 3 we had a skateboarding lesson. At the start of the lesson most of us didn’t know how to get on a skateboard, but by the end everybody knew how. At the start of the lesson we put on protective gear so no one would get hurt. Firstly we learnt how to stand up on a skateboard, then we learnt how to ride it. We learnt how to go down ramps. Quite a lot of people fell off, but it was really fun. Everyone improved their skateboarding skills. We all had fun.

Grade 5/6 camp – Canoeing

The first activity we did at camp was canoeing. It was at the river and there was a lot of islands and bridges. We wore PFDs (personal flotation device), helmets and used paddles.

First we went past a reedy point and we rafted up. Rafting up is when  the first canoe  grabs onto something solid then the other canoes grab onto the first canoe. We then went up a bit further and rafted up again.

Next we went under a bridge. We had to lay down  in the canoe so as not to hit our heads.  Then we played a game. It was tiggy. The front person tagged other canoes with their paddle, which made them “it’”. When it ended we all paddled back. Canoeing was really fun.

Have you ever been canoeing or kayaking?

Grade 5/6 camp – Vertical Challenge

In the morning of Day 3 we faced the Vertical Challenge. The Vertical Challenge is a type of high ropes course, but it goes vertically. The Challenge consists of a ladder, a spider net, giant poles with ‘staples’ for hand-holds and finally a rock climbing wall.

At the end of the course you “hi five” the pole and then you get lowered back down to the ground by your fellow classmates. If you don’t want to go to the top you just go as far as you can.

It was very challenging but fun at the same time. It was about 20 metres high.

Have you ever climbed a Vertical Challenge or scaled a High Ropes course?
What’s the scariest physical challenge you’ve ever achieved?

Grade 5/6 camp – The ‘Ga Ga’ game

Ga Ga is a cool and fun game to play with a class or friends.

You play the game in a pit with some sand and a ga ga ball (medium sized rubber ball). You are not allowed to kick the ball, you can only hit it with an open hand. It is similar to dodgeball. The object is to eliminate others by hitting them with the ball below the knees. The last person is the winner.

Ga Ga is an active fun game to play.
